" i am getting a hire car from chicago airport and as its my first time to hire a car i am wondering what the procudure is - i will be arriving at 5pm ish and will be staying in one of the hotels in the area of the airport that night and heading off the next day - i have not picked a company yet but i say they are all the same -
do i pick up the car at the airport or are they kept somewhere further away and is there any chance that they could be delivered to the hotel i will be staying in ??

"Hi! will be arriving Heathrow on April 9 and will be in the UK for a month. leaving on 9 of May.not very IT savvy. wondering if it is cheaper to book a car for 4 people from Heathrow or to book thru the internet(something not very confident of doing espec if it involves credit card details etc). Please help and if it is cheaper thru the net, then which company would offer the best deal. We are flying into Gibraltar and staying at Mijas in early April, as we found relatively good rates on Easyjet. But in trying to book a car with Europcar via the Easyjet website, it seems to say that pickup and dropoffs are in Algeciras? Am I reading this wrong?

In reading the posts in the forums, it seems everyone recommends picking up the car off airport, but I will have my young daughter and mother in law with us, so I don't know how far we'll want to walk.

Europcar seems to be the easiest and cheapest, but only if there's transportation to the airport and back.

Does anyone know what the best (and least expensive) option is?

"We just returned from Ireland and were really disappointed in the lack of customer service we received. We rented a car in Belfast from Dan Dooley Car Hire, we travelled around and returned it to thier Dublin office. The car had many scratches and dents to both rear sides and the bumper. This was documented. I noted that the rear passenger brake was rubbing and likely needed the shoe replaced. We returned the next day to see if there was another car available for a couple of days, we were told to return at the end of the day. We did so and were handed a bill for brake replacement and told that we had driven with the handbrake on. The car was an automatic, I never use a handbrake on our automatic, whether it was engaged or not, I never saw a light to indicate it was. After a long and pointless and stressful discussion we paid the bill $521 ! We were handed a copy of the bill and left. We checked the bill later and discovered that we were also billed for two new tires and as one brake shoe. We called the next day only to be told that that was the bill and that was that! We returned to Canada and I called their office in Limrick and sent the bill to them, but again was told that's just the way it is. In over 20 yrs of cars and many times I've replaced brakes, I have never had to replace tires also. I truly feel that the tires were well worn when we got the car as it was far from being in perfect condition. Very very disappointing and I would not recommend this company to anyone."

"Have any of you lot rented a car in the states previously? If so, anyone got any advice on companies to go with or tips on stuff to do/avoid? Dont really know that much about how it all works, whether you can pick up and drop off in different states etc, and i find it best to have anecdotal evidence from people that have done it before then trawling the company websites.

I'm going on a road trip around the US in September with a couple of mates and so its a bit of a crucial part to get right :)

Second question: Does anyone know much about driving regulations over there? I'm 26 and i've been driving since I was 18 so I'm sure i'll be fine in terms of rental and insurance, but one mate is in the process of learning right now. Have you got to have been driving for a certain length of time before you can drive over there?

" I have never been to Japan before and neither speak nor read Japanese. I will be travelling with a four year old and a two year old and really need good advice as to how to get from Narita to Yokosuka. Our flight arrives at 6:30am and even though there is a direct train (3hr plus trip) to Yokosuka, I do not know if this is the best option for us. Everyone I know has tried to discourage me from driving but I can't help but think that at least then the kids will be restrained instead of possibly running around madly on a train. I am also concerned with the fact that it will be peak hour and what about the crush of people? My plan was to catch the Airport limousine bus to Yokohama City Air Terminal (YCAT) and hire a car from there but as I am not familiar with the area, I do not know where the closest Hertz office would be so instead, I plan to catch the bus to Haneda and drive from there. It apparently puts me about 1 - 1 1/2 hours away from my destination which doesn't seem so daunting if I drive. This way, I also miss the peak hour traffic from Narita, someone else is doing the driving.
I would really appreciate any and all advice that any of you are willing to offer.

I thought i'd bought a fully inclusive policy, but when i went to pick the car up i was offered an additional excess policy of £15.00 per day - over £100 extra for the week! I declined to take this thinking i had ample cover (and the benefits weren't properly outlined to me). Have done a few quotes with various companies and have come across the option to have a refundable excess.

Can't find out much about this. Just says that local suppliers will often take a deposit from you on collection of car, to cover any damage. Therefore choosing this option will mean that you can get this back.

Does anyone know how much of a deposit they take?

It makes about £12 difference to the total. It's difficult to know whether it's worth bothering.
